The QS Sustainability Ranking is an assessment system developed by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), one of the world's leading university ranking organisations, which focuses specifically on sustainability issues. Its aim is to show the extent to which universities contribute to solving global sustainability challenges.
The ranking is based on three main pillars:
When compiling its rankings, QS takes into account the extent to which universities contribute to sustainability-related research, i.e. whether their publications contain key terms and topics related to sustainable development, environmental awareness, climate change, renewable energy, or social equality. Scientific works related to these topics directly influence the institution's ranking.
A publication is taken into account in the ranking if the article appears in the Scopus database and the topic of the publication can be classified under one of the SDGs based on the title, abstract, or keywords.
Since this check is performed using a query, it is important that the author(s) include the appropriate term(s) in the title, abstract, or keywords of the publication.
Our working group members have compiled a list of which terms need to be included in the publication for it to be included in the Sustainability Ranking for each SDG. Click on the link next to the SDG to view the corresponding list.
